This patient-friendly article is about chemotherapy drug, Vincristine (Oncovin) which is used for the treatment of leukaemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. It is administered intravenously and as developed from the periwinkle plant (known as vinca) and is part of a group of drugs called vinca alkaloids. It also forms part of a triplen drug therapy for brain tumours called PCV (Procarbazine, CCNU and Vincristine).
Side effects can include: lowered resistance to infection, bruising and bleeding, peripheral neuropathy, temporary hair thinning or loss, stomach cramps, fatigue.
