Alternative Treatments for lymphocytic Leukemia - ALL and CLL

Leukaemia

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL); Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL)  are cancers of the lymphocytes in the bone marrow; lymphocytes are thprecursors to white blood cells: CLL is usually slow growing while ALL is usually aggressive. ALL can also be called Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia; CLL can be called Chronic Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

In the UK in the 2014-2016 period there were fewer than 800 cases of ALL a year with a third more cases in men. There were approximately 3,800 cases of CLL per year. There are almost twice as many cases in men.

According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the 5 year survival rates are CLL 86.8%; and ALL 71.6%. In children under the age of 15 the figure for ALL is 90.6%; for children younger than 5 it is 94.5%. Overall, leukemia is the 8th largest cancer.

Alternative treatments for lyphocytic and lymphoblastic leukemia

1. Immunotherapy - While there are a number of immunotherapy drugs on the market, the most interesting developments with ALL and CLL are in CAR-T immunotherapy. Kymriah is a CAR-T immunotherapy made from the patient's own T-cells and is a major development in ALL.

2. Natural Treatments - In CLL we have had several patients who have gone the 'all natural route' choosing to use oregano oil to kill off yeasts; pau d'arco to kill viruses, and artemisinin to attack pathogens. They have then used herbal remedies where there is (limited) research showing benefit - such as Honokiol, feverfew, grape seed extract and green tea.

Go to Honokiol and CLL and blood cancers.

3. Sugar Control - It is important that people with this cancer control their blood sugar. There is very specific research showing that leukemia cells rob adjacent healthy cells of sugar and set up conditions in the body that raise the blood sugar. Herbs such as Berberine are useful (3 x 500 mg per day). There are oncologists in London who use metformin.
