Triple Negative Breast Cancer progression reduces with natural compounds

2014 Research

A research study in mice has confirmed that a supplement containing a number of bioactive natural compounds, each known to have anti-cancer benefits, can inhibit metastases in Triple Negative Breast Cancer. This is not the first time we have reported that natural compounds can have positive effects with this difficult disease.

In a research study at the Methodist Research Institute at Indiana University Health, a branded natural compound called BreastDefend™ (BD) was studied for its ability to reduce metastases and progression in Triple Negative Breast cancer.

The branded compound contained:

* Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP),

* Extracts from medicinal mushrooms (Coriolus versicolor, Ganoderma lucidum, Phellinus linteus),

* Medicinal herbs (Scutellaria barbata, Astragalus membranaceus, Curcuma longa),

* Purified biologically active nutritional compounds (for example, I3C/DIM - indole 3 carbinol/diindolylmethane - and quercetin).

The compound was previously found to inhibit proliferation and metastatic behaviour of invasive human breast cancer cells in vitro. In the new study, the scientists evaluated whether BD suppressed growth and breast-to lung cancer metastasis in an orthotopic model of human breast cancer cells implanted in mice.

The natural compound mix was shown to ‘significantly decrease’ the change in tumour volume over time compared to the control group and it reduced the breast to lung rate of metastases from 67% in the control group to just 20% in the subjects taking the natural compound mixture.

The anti-metastatic activity of BD in vivo was further confirmed by the down-regulation of expression of PLAU (urokinase plasminogen activator, uPA) and CXCR4 (C-X-C chemokine receptor-4) genes in the breast tumors.
The researchers concluded that BD may be considered as a biological therapeutic agent against invasive breast cancers.
