Diet recommendations for men with prostate cancer

2015 Research

Once a man has been treated for prostate cancer, what diet most helps him prevent it returning? Sadly, not a standard Western Diet, according to the Harvard School of Public Health.

We have told you before that high bad fats lead to high triglyceride plasma levels, and how this typical Western phenomenon brings prostate cancer rushing back. Now there is a wider study.

Reanalysing results from the Physicians Health Study (926 men), those men on a saturated fat, red and processed meat and carb-rich diet had a 67% increased risk of dying from any cause (Cancer Prevention Research)

And men with prostate cancer, were followed for 14 years and significantly increase their chances of dying from the disease if they fail to eat healthily after being diagnosed.

Researcher Dr Jorge Chavarro noted that previous studies have suggested that some foods may slow down the growth of prostate cancer or reduce the risk of it returning.

And … Overall death rates of men choosing a colourful Mediterranean style diet rich in vegetables, fruit, fish and beans were reduced by 36%.

After diagnosis, the men were followed for an average of 14 years and placed in one of four groups according to the extent to which they embraced a typical western diet. The more they moved from it towards a colourful Mediterranean Diet, the better the outcome.

Best foods were nuts, seeds, colourful vegetables, soya products, pulses such as kidney beans, chickpeas and lentils, broccoli, kale and other cruciferous vegetables, cooked tomatoes, green tea and pomegranate juice.

Good food sources of the mineral selenium were also thought to be beneficial. They include Brazil nuts, liver, kidney, fish, seafood and poultry.

But then, CANCERactive has been telling you this for years.
