How to take curcumin properly

2014 Research

This article explains how to take Curcumin (turmeric) because it is a molecule too large to pass easily across the gut wall and so only about 7% is normally absorbed. In other words, 93% of your supplement and your money will be wasted if you don’t take it properly.

Turmeric (curcumin) has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for more than a thousand years. This has not prevented some drugs companies trying to patent it, of course.

And they would want to. We have covered research on this phenol in Cancer Watch, especially in its abilities to restrict metastases, reduce cellular inflammation, stop the growth of cancer, lower PSA levels and far more. Indeed, curcumin is the most researched compound of all – more than any other drug or vitamin. A Professor at MD Anderson has actually said that, in his opinion, there is not a cancer pathway that cucumin doesn’t affect, such is its power.

BUT. This spice is hard to digest. It is a large molecule and has to cross the gut wall. The American Cancer Society recommends that patients break the capsule into a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil, and then add black pepper. Why the pepper? Well, not only does it help the absorption, but piperine (the active ingredient) aids the effectiveness, and also has anti-cancer properties of its own.

Indeed, curcumin should always be taken with fats - either with meals, or extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil or other fats and oils.

But be careful of curcumin supplements - Unfortunately, there are lots of cheap supplements on the market and some have been known to be of poor quality, and have low purity. Fillers and even sawdust have be known to be present.

So first buy a quality product. Take at least a 700 mg dose three times a day, as above. And make sure the compound is ‘full-spectrum’ and from the root. You may want the organic version as pesticides can be commonly absorbed by turmeric root.
