Yet more worrying evidence that orthodox cancer treatments can cause more harm than good comes with research showing women who have had radiotherapy for breast cancer have a significantly increased risk of developing a deadly form of lung cancer.
Doctors have found the risk of new lung tumours forming in women treated with radiation after breast cancer surgery rises as the dosage increases. Smokers fared far worse than non-smokers.
Women receiving radiation to a breast have approximately a 1 in 200 chance of developing a completely new cancer – in this case a primary lung cancer not a secondary tumour that has spread from the original breast cancer.
Researchers at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, investigated the link between the dose of radiation administered and the incidence of lung cancer, as well as the effects of smoking. The results were presented at the 33rd conference of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology in Vienna.
Dr Grantzau the lead researchers however stated that,“It’s important to emphasise the risk of getting a tobacco-induced lung cancer is much higher than the risk of getting a radiation-induced second lung cancer.”
