Spirulina appears to activate NK cells against cancer

Research from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Hokkaido University in Japan, has shown that spirulina extract increases Natural Killer cell (NK) immune response against tumours.

Melanoma tumors were transplanted onto mice, who were then given oral solutions of spirulina in hot water. NK and Rae-1 response was noted and the melanoma tumours regressed and disappeared. NK cells are an important part of the immune response along with many other cells like dendritic cells, T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes and macrophages. NK cell response seems to increase the response of other immune cells. One specific immune resonse involved the BCG cell wall skeleton which worked with spirulina to boost IFN gamma production.

Like chlorella, spirulina has research behind covered in Cancer Watch previously to show many benefits. Both are rich in minerals, vitamins, chlorophyll and protein.
