The Sunday Show: How Chris suggested a World first

The Sunday Show: How Chris suggested a World first

On Easter Sunday, (20th April 2025), we have a slightly different Sunday Show, where Chris and Jonathan Bracey talk about how Jonathan's 2-year-old with a sarcoma in his liver went from 'terminal' to 'cured' because Chris had an idea that no one else had even considered; and it worked; it led to a World First in fact.

This show is free to everybody.

Jonathan Bracey has a 2-year old son, George. George had a tumour - a Rhabdomyosarcoma - under his portal vein in his liver. Great Ormond St gave him 3 rounds of chemo, to no avail. They said that if it cannot be operated on, there may be nothing more they could do.

Jonathan didn't give up. He took his son back to King's College London, and went in search of further options. He contacted Chris and asked for his help. Ordinarily Chris doesn't help children under 18. After all, he doesn't treat cancer; he encourages patients to build a body conducive to health rather than the body they have, which is conducive to cancer. Chris was not sure how he could do this with a 2-year-old!!

However, when Johnathan told Chris the problem, Chris made a suggestion, one he'd seen work before. Chris suggested Johnathan contacted Professor Edward Leen at the Princess Grace Hospital in Hammersmith, to enquire about the Nanoknife IRE. This was developed in the USA to tackle inoperable tumours. Chris had suggested it to patients several times before both in the UK and USA, usually for liver problems.

King's went in to overdrive. First, they sought and obtained a Paediatric licence to use the Nanoknife on a child. The Nanoknife then killed the parts of the tumour that were difficult to reach and thus obtained a clear margin around the tumour. King's then took out the tumour they could now more easily see and reach. The combined approach was a World First and George became the youngest patient to receive Nanoknife treatment in the UK. 18 months on and George is cancer-free.

As Jonathan wrote to Chris, "You played a big part Chris in helping to figure out the plan that saved George’s life. We’re forever in debt to you for that and will always be grateful for all your help and advice".
