Screening studies for Lung Cancer

Spiral CT scanning for lung cancer is expensive but it appears to be able to find smaller cancers. These are not necessarily early cancers but can be very aggressive. But it’s super-sensitivity can be a problem and may give false positive results. So the National Cancer Institute in the USA is launching a $200 million study to check the CT scans against chest X-rays for their long-term reduction in cancer deaths. It will be a national study involving 50,000 current and former smokers.
