How to get the best results from Radiotherapy and reduce side-effects

Radiotherapy can be the best weapon against cancer, but many patients fear the side-effects. Here’s how to get the best results and minimise the side-effects.

  1. First, always ask what type of radiotherapy you are going to have. Will it be a single direct beam? Or will it be from a Robot moving round you and firing at you from 5 or more angles? Either way, ask what organs or structures (the gut, backbone) will also be hit by the beam.

  2. Next, research tells us very clearly what can help you achieve the best results.

    1. Hyperbaric Oxygen or exercise. Oxygenating the tissues improves the immune system and Oxygenating the tumours causes their defense systems to crash. The University of Arizona confirmed - better results, less side-effects.

    2. There are well known radiosensitisers which weaken the defence systems of the tumour allowing the Radiotherapy to kill more cancer cells. These include Berberine (3 x 500 mg), Turmeric (1 gm with oil and black pepper) and Melatonin (10-20 mg, before bed).

    3. Selenium supplementation in radiotherapy has been studied extensively, showing potential benefits in reducing side effects and improving patient outcomes. However, the results are mixed. One recent study used selenium nanoparticle, which obtained good results.

  3. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are considered the primary source of radiation-resistance. You might consider taking the number 1 Ayurvedic herb Tulsi (Holy Basil) for its Ursolic Acid content; you could also eat raw pistachio nuts for the same reason. Sulforaphane (sproting seeds, and Genisein (soy products) are also known to help reduce CSCs.

  4. Reducing side-effects particularly in healthy tissue is an important issue - AHCC from the Shiitake mushroom, fresh ginger and parsley oil have been shown to be helpful as has turmeric.

  5. If you have the Radiotherapy for more than a week (5 days) you might find your white cells take a hit. Echinacea, and/or 2 gm of Turkey Tail Organic Mushroom powder can help.

  6. You may also find you have lowered B-vitamins, and therefore increased Homocysteine levels - take a B complex every other day. A fish oil will help their action.

  7. Radiotherapy can damage the gut microbiome. It might be worth giving your gut a full replenishment with butyrate and unpasteurised cheese.

  8. Fatigue can be a serious problem for some patients - Acetyl-L-Carnitine can improve the situation.

  9. Skin changes, burns, rashes - can be improved by using topical Aloe Vera overnight.

  10. The location of the cancer matters - Radiotherapy around the mouth and neck area may require tooth removal; with prostate cancer, protection for the rectum can be provided. There is research that milk thistle can reduce healthy cellular damage, when having whole brain radiation.
