Chlamydia, which has been linked to increases in ovarian cancer (June 2003 icon), has reached record levels in the UK. An annual rise of 13 per cent has resulted in 46,000 women being affected. Young holiday makers are blamed for the increase as promiscuity reaches new heights. The Health Protection Agency revealed that 81,000 cases of chlamydia in women and men were treated at sexually transmitted disease clinics in Britain last year. Back in 1995 the figure was just over 30,000. The HPA talks of an epidemic. The biggest problem is that many of those infected show no symptoms. A national screening programme is being introduced.
