Scotland acts on complementary cancer treatment benefits

It seems someone may be reading my e newsletters. The Scottish Cancer Prevention Network assembled 70 people to its annual conference to discuss prevention of cancer through lifestyle choices beyond smoking.

There is increasing evidence of the impact of weight management, physical activity and diet on preventing and managing cancer, said Annie Anderson, Professor of Public Health Nutrition at the University of Dundee and co-organiser of the conference.

"Better diet, regular activity and less inactivity, lower alcohol intake and body weight management are already things that are being encouraged across the population but there are challenges. How we get the message over that these things can also have a major effect on cancer risk is a key issue."

But the conference theme was not just about prevention Translating lifestyle theory to healthy practice for the reduction of cancer occurrence and recurrence’, emphasised prevention of recurrence, just as I do, repeatedly.

The keynote speaker is Professor Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, who is the Associate Director for Cancer Prevention and Control at the University of Alabama. Her research career has spanned basic science studies focused on determining mechanisms of action of food-related components on neoplastic progression, to clinical research that involves nutrition-related concerns of cancer patients, as well as determining effective lifestyle interventions that improve the overall health of cancer survivors and their families.
