The CANCERactive Medical Board
Since the day we started this charity our agreed mission with the Charites Commission has been to provide information and support for people with cancer.
Over the past nine years we have loaded over 3400 pages onto this website. In some cases time changes the information and we try to ´catch´ all these changes.
* For example, Avastin was originally approved for use with a number of cancers including breast cancer. Following further clinical trials and poor results, the FDA approval for the drug was withdrawn for breast cancer. We have changed the relevant pages.
* For example, when we first suggested HIFU for prostate cancer it was 8 years ago following an appeal to us by seven of Europe´s top urologists. Only now does it have clinical trials to support its use.
We have also loaded an extremely diverse range of subjects - from drugs and radiotherapy to research on herbs or complementary therapies.
And we have a wide range of contributors, from journalists to oncology professors in a spectrum of oncology fields.
Since day one we have always checked our information, where relevant, with expert oncologists, doctors and professors and experts in various complementary and new, ´alternative´ fields. But the nature of our site is that it is article-based and we may have interviewed an oncologist on his views on breast cancer, and another oncologist might disagree. This is why we tell you to always consult your own doctor or oncologist before taking action or refraining from taking action concerning anything we may have written about. You know yourself that if you go for a ´second opinion´ it might not be exactly the same as the original opinion, and the way we present interviews and articles may produce similar conflicts on this site.
Since the start of 2011 we have been talking with experts in UK oncology and asking them to answer questions on our members forum. Gradually we have been forming a more formal ´Medical Board´. It comprises expert oncologists, doctors and professors and experts in certain complementary cancer therapies.
We have taken the decision not to name any member of this Medical Board for the simple reason that over the last twelve months members of our staff have had to put up with increasing and unwarranted abuse from people who are dubbed ´Skeptics´. Some of this has been particularly unpleasant and in poor taste.
Since day one, the Trustees of CANCERactive have never received a single complaint about the factual accuracy of the website. Yet Skeptics write blogs to the General public saying how the site is ´inaccurate´ or ´makes claims that are absurd´! If you had a complaint about your car, would you write a blog? No, you would complain direct to the manufacturer or the garage that sold it to you. Since none of these ´critics´ ever bring their concerns to us - along with research evidence that might show their views to have any weight - we can only conclude that their reason to go ´public´ is not to protect cancer patients or improve the CANCERactive site as would seem sensible and genuinely helpful and positive towards cancer patients, but something else. Their ulterior motive? To silence us completely. How does that help someone with cancer?
Of course, it is also possible that these Skeptics have no research that shows we are inaccurate anyway. None who has attacked us so far is even an oncologist!
The CANCERactive ´open-mind´ policy
All we can say is that if anyone finds anything they believe to be inaccurate, all they have to do is address their research evidence to firstname.lastname@example.org and our panel of oncologists and cancer experts will review the research. We have had this policy since day one - we call it the CANCERactive ´open-mind´ policy.
In this way you can be sure the information we present - whether on drugs and diagnosis, or complementary therapies and new therapies - is up-to-date, balanced and accurate.
