Radiotherapy burns

Radiotherapy

Many cancer patients experience superficial redness or even burning from radiotherapy during cancer treatment. Several different skin creams containing drugs may be prescribed by your doctor or the radiologist.  However, there are two very good natural alternatives for soothing radiotherapy redness, you can buy for yourself.

CALENDULA has a phase III Randomised Clinical Trial behind it as an effective and better alternative to topical steroidal creams (J Clin Oncol. 2004 Apr 15;22(8):1447-53.). The trial took women being treated for breast cancer and concluded that the incidence of skin problems was significantly lower in the group using the herb, than the group using a drug.

Calendula officinalis (also called pot marigold, gold-bloom, maybud). It’s known actions are anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, anti-haemorrhagic, styptic, vulnerary and lymphatic. The cream or ointment is made from the marigold flowers and is known to help heal minor wounds, skin ulcers and rashes. An infusion of marigold flowers is also used as a lotion for burns, including sunburn. There are now a number of research studies on its use. It is considered a safe and non-toxic herb, however it should be avoided where there is a known sensitivity to the Compositae species.

Aloe Vera

Another option is to use ALOE VERA gel. There are a number of 99% natural gel products on the market. Aloe Vera has been used since Egyptian Times for burns and skin problems. It is known to be highly soothing. We have an article you can read on Aloe Vera just click here.
