More than three years ago, US health bodies like the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Paediatrics strongly recommended that thimerosal be removed from vaccines as soon as possible. Thimerosal is an additive that has been used as a vaccine preservative since the 1930s and contains 49.6 per cent mercury by weight. Mercury is a toxin that can build up in the body and, in high enough doses, can result in long-term immune and nervous system weakening. Despite this recommendation, thimerosal is still present in many vaccines today.
Mercury is especially dangerous to a foetus or small child because the brain is still in development and more prone to damage. Despite this, many of the thimerosal-containing vaccines, which include hepatitis B, diphtheria, pertussis, acellular pertussis, tetanus and Hib, are recommended specifically for children. In fact, many US infants receive up to 15 vaccines that contain mercury by the time they are six months old! (Dr Mercola - www.mercola.com)
