The Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust, which is helping to find a cure for brain tumours have funded a number of studies into the growth of malignant brain tumours in the UK. Brain Tumours are the third largest cause of death in children after road accidents and leukaemia.
Aspartame launched as a sweetener in 1981 and made by Mosanto, has had its critics who have argued about links to Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson´s and even Alzheimer´s without much evidence. Aspartame has been linked with induced aggressive brain tumours (glioblastomas) in laboratory rats and more and more humans are getting this type of tumour. The sweetener was approved by the FDA and is used in a host of fruit drinks, fizzy diet drinks and even low fat yoghurts.
The Trust has now set aside a budget to see whether the growth of glioblastoma brain tumours since Aspartame arrived in the UK is linked, or merely a co-incidence. Research is being conducted at King´s College, London by Drs P. Nunn and G. Pilkington. We will keep you informed on the results.
